SACRED FIRES

Many woods are thought to have sacred properties, and many cultures have made use of them, from Beltane balefires, funeral pyres, and wicker men, to sweat lodges. Whole books have been written on sacred woods and plants, but I'll include a few basic recipes here that you can modify as needed. You can also refer to Table 4: Sacred Woods. Note: I recommend Scott Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs and The Complete Book of Incense, Oils and Brews, as well as Ellen Evert Hopman's A Druid's Herbal for the Sacred Earth Year for further research.

Beltane Balefire

Balefires were used to bless and purify. A large fire was kept lit on a hilltop all of May Eve to guide in the summer sun and, in some traditions, the Seelie Ride. Cattle and women trying to conceive jumped over or between balefires to encourage fertility.

Oak, ash, and hawthorn are sacred to the Druids and the coming of summer. “By oak, ash, and thorn” is an oath you have probably heard, which swears on the most sacred of trees. In North America, true ash is in short supply, so many use rowan (also called mountain ash) or locust as a substitute.

Stack these three woods in equal parts and light them without artificial fuels. Keep the sacred fire free of contaminants for your Beltane celebration. When the rite has ended, extinguish the fire and keep some ashes from it to scatter on the site of your sacred balefire next year!

Samhain Fire

Use any five of the following woods depending on local availability:
